Sharing the Challenge
A course for parents of disabled adults and self-advocates
Sharing the challenge is a newly designed leadership training and
development course for parents of disabled adults and self advocates.
Underpinned by a strong value base of inclusion and equality, the
course provides information, training, and skills building so that
the participants gain the knowledge they need to campaign and advocate
for themselves, for others and for a better future for disabled
people in our society.
The course is run over five sessions, designed to fit into the
carers' day, and includes the following topics:
-
Understanding why things are the
way they are.
-
Exclusion and inclusion.
-
Getting the right support and employment
and training.
-
Making change happen locally – making
changes at a national level.
-
Person centred planning.
The course has grown out of the experience of running the ‘Partners
in Policy Making’ programme.

There are now several parts of the country that have run a Partners
in Policy making programme for people with learning disabilities
and family caters. Graduates are equipped and empowered to take
a more informed role in local planning and decision making.
